Abstract
Objectives£ºThis study was performed to assess the needs of 119 rescuers when they work for people with mental illnesses. Other purposes of the study were to identify awareness of mental health and attitudes toward the mentally ill of the 119 rescuers and to propose strategies to develop effective education program and crisis intervention system.

Methods£ºThe study subject consisted of one hundred and sixty 119 rescuers. The study tool was a self-report questionnaire including general characteristics, 12-item severity of mental health problems and 40-item CAMI scale.

Results£ºThe most severe obstacles in transfer of the mentally ill were uncooperativeness of patient, difficulty of choice of hospital, and difficulty in decision making due to insufficient knowledge and information about mental illness. The Most important strategy for crisis intervention was collaborating system in the community, but demand for education and information about mental illness was relatively low. The 119 rescuers generally perceived the mental health problems to be severe and tended to take alcoholism, suicide, depression more seriously. They showed more positive attitudes than general population, but less positive attitudes than mental health professional trainees and the non-psychiatric physicians, in all 4 subcategories of CAMI scale. The high academic level rescuers were less positive attitudes than others. Experience of psychiatric problems in family and experience in transferring people with mental illness in the previous year showed more positive attitudes than others.

Conclusions£ºIt is necessary to develop effective education program and information system about alcoholism, suicide, depression and psychosis for 119 rescuers and build up well-organized crisis intervention system such as collaborating system in the community. Through the strategies to increase chance of contact with the mentally ill, the attitude of the 119 rescuers can be improved.
